VANCOUVER DINING
During the past few months, the Vancouver restaurant scene has taken on a bit of a Whistler twist.
Two of Whistler’s most popular casual
local eateries, Peaked Pies and La Cantina,
recently expanded their operations to
include locations in the city — Peaked Pies
at 975 Denman St., and La Cantina just a
few blocks away, at 722 Nelson Street.
Peaked Pies, which serves up delectable
Australian-style meat and dessert pies, as
well as artisan coffee, has been a staple of
Whistler life for a few years — among the
Aussie expats who work there, non-Aussie
Whistlerites and resort guests. Kerri Jones,
the Aussie woman who started Peaked Pies
along with transplanted Vancouver Islander
co-owner Alex Relf, opened the Vancouver
location in late 2016 to rave reviews. Jones
said she and Relf took about 18 months to
find just the right location, but that it was
time well spent. Surprisingly, the clientele
in Vancouver has been like what they’ve
seen in Whistler.
“We’ve got a bigger lunch crowd in
Whistler, whereas we get a lot more of the
dinner crowd in Vancouver,” she said. “We
still get lots of Australians who drive across
town to visit us, including a lot of people
who bring friends along. We also get a lot
of people who have travelled to Australia,
have tried the pies and want to experience
that again.”

A TASTE OF WHISTLER
in the Big City
STORY BY DAVID BURKE
IMAGES BY JOERN ROHDE
La Cantina Urban Taco Bar, which established a loyal following with its first location in Whistler, introduced
its authentic, healthful Mexican fare to
Vancouver this past fall. Pepe Barajas, La
Cantina’s president and CEO, said it took
a year to find the Nelson Street location.
“It’s like the Whistler one in that we have
a good residential, office and hotel base to
draw from,” he said.
Barajas expressed confidence that what
made the taqueria successful in Whistler
— nutritious and tasty tacos served in a
friendly and inviting setting — will attract
a loyal following in the city. “We haven’t
deviated into Tex-Mex; we serve authentic
Mexican food,” he said. “I think people
also like the friendly service — when we
have regular clients, we remember what
people like and we greet them; so, they feel
familiar, like part of our family.
“We try to put a wide range of offerings in
there, for the carnivorous and for the vegan;
so, for people with dietary restrictions,
Mexican food is a great option.”
